Following Christ in a Culture That Cancels Truth

“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness…”Isaiah 5:20 (NASB)

Introduction

We live in a time where truth is not only questioned—it’s often canceled.

If you take a stand for biblical morality, speak out against sin, or declare that Jesus is the only way, you’re likely to be labeled intolerant, judgmental, or worse.

In today’s world, it feels safer to stay silent. But Christ didn’t call us to blend in—He called us to be light in the darkness (Philippians 2:15).

So the question becomes: How do we follow Jesus faithfully when the culture around us rejects absolute truth?

Prayer:

Before we begin, if you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ be sure that you have privately named your sins to God the Father using 1 John 1:9 (If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness).  You will then be in fellowship with God, filled with the Holy Spirit, and ready to learn Bible doctrine.  If you have never personally believed in the Lord Jesus Christ as your savior, the issue is not naming your sins, but faith alone in Christ alone. John 3:36 (He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.)

The Problem: A World That No Longer Tolerates Truth

We’ve moved from a culture of disagreement to one of cancellation—where disagreement equals hate and truth is subjective.

  • Right and wrong are redefined.

Sin is glamorized. Morality is mocked.

  • Jesus is minimized.

Culture loves a version of Jesus that’s kind and inclusive—but not one who judges, confronts, or demands obedience.

  • Christians are pressured to compromise.

There’s a growing cost to being faithful to biblical doctrine.

“For the time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine…”2 Timothy 4:3 (NASB)

The Biblical Solution: Stand Firm in Truth—No Matter the Cost

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”Romans 12:2 (NASB)

God never promised His truth would be popular—only that it would be eternal (Psalm 119:89).

Jesus said the world would hate those who follow Him (John 15:18-19), but He also said, “Take courage; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Three Commitments for Believers Living in a Cancel Culture:

1. Commit to God’s Word—Not Popular Opinion

Truth doesn’t evolve. It is revealed in Scripture and never changes.

“Forever, Lord, Your word stands in heaven.”Psalm 119:89 (NASB)

  • Stay grounded in daily Bible doctrine.

  • Filter everything—news, advice, emotions—through God’s Word.

2. Speak with Boldness and Clarity

We are not called to blend in but to shine. Silence may feel safe, but truth unspoken leaves others in darkness.

“Preach the word… correct, rebuke, and exhort, with great patience and instruction.”2 Timothy 4:2 (NASB)

  • Don’t shrink back from hard conversations.

  • Don’t water down truth to avoid offense.

3. Expect Rejection, But Don’t Fear It

Jesus was rejected, and we will be too. But rejection by the world is far better than compromise before God.

“Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness…”Matthew 5:10 (NASB)

  • Courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s the decision to obey despite it.

  • Eternity matters more than applause.

Practical Application: How to Follow Christ Boldly Today

  • Stay in Fellowship (1 John 1:9):

You cannot reflect truth if you’re out of fellowship with the God of truth.

  • Be a Student of Doctrine:

You need consistent, accurate teaching from a prepared pastor to discern spiritual lies.

  • Don’t Engage in Foolish Arguments:

Speak truth with grace. Don’t be baited into unfruitful debates (Titus 3:9).

  • Pray for Courage and Compassion:

Ask God to give you both boldness and a heart of humility when sharing truth.

Reflection Questions

  • Where in my life am I tempted to stay silent about truth?

  • Do I value God’s approval more than people’s approval?

  • How can I be a light in a world that prefers darkness?

Closing Encouragement

Truth doesn’t need to be rebranded—it needs to be proclaimed.

Jesus Christ is not a preference. He is the only way, the only truth, and the only life (John 14:6).

So speak truth. Live truth. Stand for truth—even when it costs you.

“Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.”1 Corinthians 16:13 (NASB)

Allow time to study Bible doctrine and prayer and apply what you learn to your life, but you can’t do this alone. You need a pastor-teacher. I recommend the teachings from Pastor R.B. Thieme II and his son R.B. Thieme III.. We cannot know the Will of God for our lives without understanding who and what he is! Knowledge builds trust, and trust builds knowledge.
