Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Have you ever felt like you’re walking in the dark, unsure of what’s ahead? Maybe you’re facing a major life decision, waiting on God to answer a prayer, or struggling with doubt. It’s in these moments that we are called to walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).

But what does that mean? And how do we trust God when we don’t see the full picture?

Prayer:

Before we begin, if you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ be sure that you have privately named your sins to God the Father using 1 John 1:9 (If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness).  You will then be in fellowship with God, filled with the Holy Spirit, and ready to learn Bible doctrine.  If you have never personally believed in the Lord Jesus Christ as your savior, the issue is not naming your sins, but faith alone in Christ alone. John 3:36 (He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.)

1. Faith Means Trusting the Unseen

We live in a world that teaches us to trust only what we can see, feel, and control. Yet, the Bible tells us that faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1).

  • Faith is believing in God’s promises even when we don’t see results.

  • Faith is trusting God’s character when circumstances don’t make sense.

  • Faith is obeying God, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Think about Abraham—God called him to leave his home and go to a place He would later reveal (Genesis 12:1). Abraham had no map, no certainty, just God’s word. Yet, he obeyed, and God led him to a land of promise.

Are there areas in your life where you’re waiting for clarity before trusting God?

2. When Sight Fails, Faith Leads

The problem with relying on sight is that our human perspective is limited. We only see a fraction of reality, but God sees the whole picture.

God’s Perspective Is Greater

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8-9

When we insist on seeing before trusting, we limit what God wants to do in our lives. Like Peter walking on water (Matthew 14:29-31), we start strong but sink when we focus on the storm instead of Jesus.

Where in your life have you been trusting only what you can see? What would change if you fully trusted God instead?

3. How to Walk by Faith Every Day

Faith is not just a one-time decision—it’s a daily walk. Here’s how you can strengthen your trust in God:

1. Surrender Control

Let go of the need to have all the answers.

Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

2. Stay Rooted in God’s Word

The more you know God’s promises, the easier it is to trust Him. Study Bible Doctrine, and Meditate on Scripture.

Romans 10:17: “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”

3. Take Small Steps of Obedience

Sometimes, faith looks like taking one small step even when you don’t see the whole staircase. Start where you are, with what you have, and trust God with the next step.

Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

4. Surround Yourself with Faithful People

Faith grows in community. Seek encouragement from those who have walked in faith before you.

Hebrews 10:24-25: “Let’s consider how to encourage one another in love and good deeds… not abandoning our own meeting together.”

Conclusion

Trusting God doesn’t mean life will be easy, but it does mean we’ll walk in His will, His peace, and His purpose. Looking back, we’ll see how every step of faith led to something greater than we could have imagined.

Allow time to study Bible doctrine and prayer and apply what you learn to your life, but you can’t do this alone. You need a pastor-teacher. I recommend the teachings from Pastor R.B. Thieme II and his son R.B. Thieme III.. We cannot know the Will of God for our lives without understanding who and what he is! Knowledge builds trust, and trust builds knowledge.
